An analysis of the character of Raskolnikov in Dostoevsky\u27s Crime and Punishment and his journey towards a truer understanding of freedom. This paper comments on \u27freedom\u27 as understood by St. Thomas Aquinas and Aristotle, and applies this view of freedom to the characters of Raskolnikov, Sonya, Svidrigailov and Porfiry. The paper shows how the Thomistic-Aristotelian view of freedom is prevalent in this work by Dostoevsky
Framework for the implementation of urban big screens in the public space
In the last decade, big urban screens have appeared in town squares and on building facades across the UK. The use of these screens brings new potentials and challenges for city regulators, artists, architects, urban designers, producers, broadcasters and advertisers. Dynamic moving images form new architectural material, affecting our perception and the experience of the space around us. A new form of urban space is emerging that is fundamentally different from what we have known, and it seems that we are
ill-equipped to deal with and analyse it.
We are just beginning to understand the opportunities for public information, art and community engagement. Most of screens at present serve mainly commercial purposes, they do not broadcast information aimed at sharing community content nor do they support public social interactions. We
need to see more negotiation between commercial, public and cultural interests. The SCREAM project addresses these new challenges by looking at the physical urban spaces and the potential spaces created by the new technologies
Does hemispheric lateralization influence functional and cardiovascular outcomes after stroke?: an analysis of placebo-treated patients from prospective acute stroke trials
<p><b>Background and Purpose:</b> The influence of stroke lateralization on functional and cardiovascular outcome after stroke is not well established. We evaluated the influence of hemispheric lateralization among patients enrolled in prospective acute stroke trials.</p>
<p><b>Methods:</b> We obtained data from the VISTA database for acute stroke trials which reported lateralization. Baseline data, cardiac adverse events, and 90-day outcomes were compared between right and left hemisphere stroke patients. A "hemisphere unbiased" subscore of the NIHSS which omitted items strongly associated with lateralized cognitive deficits was also compared for trials which reported individual NIHSS item scores. A multivariable analysis of outcome predictors was performed.</p>
<p><b>Results:</b> Three acute stroke trials met the prespecified inclusion criteria. 1644 placebo-treated patients with documented hemispheric lateralization were included in the analysis. Baseline NIHSS was higher for left hemisphere patients (mean 16.2, versus 12.8 right, P < 0.001); there was no difference in the "hemisphere unbiased" NIHSS subscore (10.88 left, 11.08 right, n=687, P= 0.49). There was no difference between hemispheres in 90-day modified Rankin Score (3.43 left, 3.29 right, P=0.13), mortality (22.1% left, 19.5% right, P=0.20), or cardiac adverse events (P=0.71). Hemispheric lateralization was not an independent predictor of outcome in the multivariable analysis after controlling for the hemispheric bias intrinsic to the NIHSS.</p>
<p><b>Conclusions:</b> There is no difference in functional outcome between patients with right or left hemisphere stroke. Use of the baseline NIHSS score to predict stroke outcome must take hemispheric lateralization into account. Stroke lateralization is not an important predictor of cardiac adverse events or 90-day mortality.</p>
Spectroscopic Observations of New Oort Cloud Comet 2006 VZ13 and Four Other Comets
Spectral data are presented for comets 2006 VZ13 (LINEAR), 2006 K4 (NEAT),
2006 OF2 (Broughton), 2P/Encke, and 93P/Lovas I, obtained with the Cerro-Tololo
Inter-American Observatory 1.5-m telescope in August 2007. Comet 2006 VZ13 is a
new Oort cloud comet and shows strong lines of CN (3880 angstroms), the Swan
band sequence for C_2 (4740, 5160, and 5630 angstroms), C_3 (4056 angstroms),
and other faint species. Lines are also identified in the spectra of the other
comets. Flux measurements of the CN, C_2 (Delta v = +1,0), and C_3 lines are
recorded for each comet and production rates and ratios are derived. When
considering the comets as a group, there is a correlation of C_2 and C_3
production with CN, but there is no conclusive evidence that the production
rate ratios depend on heliocentric distance. The continuum is also measured,
and the dust production and dust-to-gas ratios are calculated. There is a
general trend, for the group of comets, between the dust-to-gas ratio and
heliocentric distance, but it does not depend on dynamical age or class. Comet

Time Reversal Mirror and Perfect Inverse Filter in a Microscopic Model for Sound Propagation
Time reversal of quantum dynamics can be achieved by a global change of the
Hamiltonian sign (a hasty Loschmidt daemon), as in the Loschmidt Echo
experiments in NMR, or by a local but persistent procedure (a stubborn daemon)
as in the Time Reversal Mirror (TRM) used in ultrasound acoustics. While the
first is limited by chaos and disorder, the last procedure seems to benefit
from it. As a first step to quantify such stability we develop a procedure, the
Perfect Inverse Filter (PIF), that accounts for memory effects, and we apply it
to a system of coupled oscillators. In order to ensure a many-body dynamics
numerically intrinsically reversible, we develop an algorithm, the pair
partitioning, based on the Trotter strategy used for quantum dynamics. We
analyze situations where the PIF gives substantial improvements over the TRM.Comment: Submitted to Physica
